Girls’ Canterbury Cricket Finals 2020

Canterbury Finals : 28/29 October 2020Match report from coach Barry

Game 1 : Heaton 231/5 beat Ashburton Intermediate 48 in 12.4 overs.

Heaton lost the toss and were asked to bat first. Millie S and Isla C opened and in the 3rd over Millie was run out for 2 (her first dismissal for Heaton this year). The run out was through a brilliant bit of fielding by Ashburton. Isla (7) was bowled the same over and soon after Georgetta (7)  was caught and bowled. In the 5th over we were 3/36 – not ideal but we had some strong batting to come. Our next 4 batters were retired : Emily (51*), Lilly (33*), Ciara H (29*), Ava (13) – who was retired however came back in to be later run out).  Millie M (2*) and Maya Y (4) saw out the rest of the 20 overs.

I sensed we were in for a treat with the bowling. Ava D bowled beautifully and finished with the standout figures of 4-5-7. There were two dropped catches but Millie M caught a great one off Lily Y bowling (2-1-9). Ciara, Isla (2-0-8), Emily bowled beautifully (2-1-2)and Millie M (1-1-3) rounded out the bowling effort.

Game 2 : Heaton 209-2 beat Darfield 65 in 15 overs

We knew nothing about Darfield except that they had a very good bowler and a batter who scored 95 in a preliminary game. We won the toss and elected to bat. This time our openers fired and did so against a very good bowling line up. Isla (26) batted beautifully scoring well with three boundaries and both batters scoring excellent singles. After 10 overs we were 80/1 with Millie S (54*) retiring followed by a double half century with Emily (56*). Elia P (2), Abby B (8*) and Lily Y (16*) kept the scorers busy by keeping up the running and scoring shots before we ended on 209/2. Particularly pleasing was how well all the Heaton batters played their best bowler who plays division one boys cricket.

With the ball, Ciara was in excellent form (4-3-17) supported by Ava (3-2-10). Their openers looked handy and started well getting Darfield to 19 before the first wicket fell. Six bowled wickets and two run outs restricted Darfield to a total of 65. Lily Y (1-1-0) and Georgetta H (2-1-10) took wickets.

Game 3 : Waimea 65/7 after 20 overs lost to Heaton 66/2 after 10.3 overs

Light drizzle pushed the game start back half an hour, but at 10am we were all ready to go. Waimea won the toss and elected to bat first.

Ava struck success in her first over bowling the opener and finished with 3-1-9. Ciara also had success in her first 2 overs with two more wickets. Ciara finished on 3-4-10 and Maya 3-1-8 bowled well especially her last over (wicket maiden).  Millie M and Maya Y combined on a well executed run out.

We started off with Isla C (10*) and Georgetta H (9*) who did well getting us to 23 after the 4th over – they were then retired allowing Mia F (3*) and Abby B (6*) to enter the crease. Mia and Abby ran well between the wickets adding another 20 runs before Abby was caught (after picking the previous ball off her pads for 4 through fine leg. Maya Y (7) and Millie M (12*)  were left the task of getting us through to 66. Millie M looked comfortable picking up a couple of 4s through fine leg and hit the winning runs.

Congratulations to all of our 13 Heaton players on a wonderful season and for being crowned Canterbury Champions. We are very proud that you will be representing our region at the upcoming Nationals tournament.
