An incredible tournament of athletes putting their best effort forward and truly embodying the Heaton spirit. Congratulations to all of our competitors!
Table Tennis
7 boys represented Heaton at the Caims Table Tennis competition at the stadium on Blenheim Road.
We had a team of 4 and a team of 3, and both teams played superbly. They cheered each other on and when waiting made great use of the practice tables to get prepared for the upcoming matches.
Although not placed in the top three, their behaviour representing Heaton was exemplary and they should be very proud of themselves.
We would like to thank Kaishiro’s mother for being such a great help at the tournament.
Rugby Sevens
The CAIMS Netball Tournament was held over 2 days during Week 5 of Term 3, with 2 squads attending. With a very cold first day at Hagley courts both teams played well in their Pool rounds. Day 2 and sunshine made for a great day. Heaton Ma team played with determination and enthusiasm resulting in three outstanding wins. Heaton Whero displayed the Heaton values and enjoyed their games, winning the day. Overall coming in 14th place. Heaton Ma took out the tournament with a competitive final against Breens. Congratulations to both squads who represented Heaton with pride. We would like to thank the parents who managed the Heaton Whero team and our awesome supporters for giving up their time to umpire.

Hockey
Heaton Pango – 5th Place
Heaton Kīkorangi – Tournament Winner
The two-day CAIMS hockey tournament involved two teams, Heaton Kīkorangi and Pango. Players represented our school with outstanding team spirit and sportsmanship. We’re proud to share that Heaton Kīkorangi was the tournament winner, with Heaton Pango in 5th place. Special thanks to Rebecca Emslie, Charli’s R3 mum, for coaching the winning team and for all her support during the tournament. Also, we appreciated the support of the parents during the tournament, who cheered us on. Finally, we were very grateful to our two expert referees, Toby and Oliver, from Shirley Boys High School, who managed our games very capably. We loved the shoot-out practice, too!
Football Open
On Tuesday 20th of August two football teams, Kōwhai and Kākāriki went down to south Hagley Park to represent Heaton in the CAIMs football tournament. The first day was unfortunately rained out so what was meant to be the second day became our one and only day for the tournament. This meant that we had to play 6 games which were slightly shortened and there was not much time in between games. Both teams represented Heaton well, showing all the school values on and off the pitch.
Kōwhai had a fairly easy group only being troubled ever so slightly in the first game against Casebrook which ended 2-1. We breezed past Breens and Hornby, scoring more than 12 goals in the process. Into the knockout stages and we were up against a team from Ashburton. We had lots of chances and eventually got rewarded winning 3-1. We were in the semi-final against Breens. We knew this wouldn’t be an easy match. We had quite a few chances in front of goal but we were unable to finish. This led to the match ending 0-0 and going to a penalty shootout. Unfortunately, we could not capitalise despite a save from Fletcher our goalkeeper early on. The loss sent us into the 3rd place match-up against Casebrook who we had beat in the first game. However, we were well aware they had got stronger since. In the last game of the day, everyone was tired but we managed to push through and come out with a win finishing in third and ending our tournament on a high note.
Kākāriki had a pool with three other teams and got out of the pool finishing on top of the table, Here is how some of the games went. We had a great match against Ashburton B. Everyone played their positions well and all players gave 100% the whole game. Our players played their positions with pride and happy faces. The score ended up being around 15-0 to us. It’s not about the goals though, both teams played with respect throughout the whole game. We ended up versing St Thomas in a tight game and we beat them 1-0. We were very tired after 3 matches with 10-minute breaks. Unfortunately, we lost our last three games but we all enjoyed the games and finished 8th overall..
Both teams showed excellence, resilience, and all the Heaton values in the tournament. Everyone contributed and not one player was left out. This was a great experience for everyone and we hope to continue our Heaton success in the Koru games.
Jia-He and Lucas (Room 1)
Football Girls
Slowly the bus comes to a stop. Everyone starts to hop off and start getting ready for the tournament. The teachers are directing us in the way where the first game is taking place, everyone’s nerves are getting higher but so is our confidence to win.
Parents help set up a fun skill course for us to warm up as we put our boots on.
It’s not long till our first game starts but it is important to get a warm-up.
We walk over to our first field to find our opposition… Rangi Ruru. The whistle blows and we are underway on our first game. Our strikers are sprinting up the field calling for the ball. Our midfield is not far behind. Before we knew it the whistle blew for full time. I can’t believe we won our first game.
Time flew by and before we knew it we were playing our 4th game! So far we have been very successful and have won every game we played. Our energy was gone but our confidence and motivation grew as we neared the end and realised… we had a shot at winning this!
Our last game came around and we were pumped to win the last game and the CAIMS Tournament. Thanks to Mr Naidoo for all the hard work he put in with training us.
