What a great three days were had at Kōru Games at the end of last term. This was Heaton’s first time attending this event, and our eight teams performed incredibly well. Our athletes treated everyone with respect, competed with exemplary sportsmanship and showed growth and improvements over the three days. We hope that everyone who competed walked away feeling proud of themselves and that some lifelong memories have been made.
We would like to extend our thanks to our fantastic coaches and staff who supported us over the three days, as well as running practices in the weeks leading up to the tournament, our volunteer officials from Christchurch Boys High and community sports groups who refereed countless games over the three days, and the organisers from the Selwyn Sports Trust for organising such a fabulous event.

ADDITIONAL UPDATES FROM PRIMARY SPORT CANTERBURY:
The purpose of weekly sport is to give all interested young people a chance to play sport against others in our region. The enjoyment of all is of most importance to us and if this means having to alter games to accommodate differing abilities then please take the initiative and do this.
The Why: The Heaton Cross Country provides us with another opportunity to come together as a school and get some fresh air in the lungs. While this may not be everyone’s favourite event on the calendar, it is an opportunity for you to get out in the fresh air, get your body moving, push yourself out of your comfort zone, participate and do your very best. Plus – it’s a fun house event!

The schedule may be subject to changes throughout the day. Track events (60m and 100m sprints) always get priority over field events (jumping and throwing disciplines). If you are called to marshal for a track event, please let the teacher(s) in charge of your field event know that you will be leaving to run your race and that you will return to complete your field event asap.
SPECTATOR INFORMATION (PARENTS/CAREGIVERS) – please read carefully if you are planning to attend:
Parents/Caregivers are both welcome and encouraged to attend and support their children at our Heaton athletics day. Due to the school undergoing our rebuild work, parking inside Heaton is not possible and access to the field via the school will be challenging.
We ask that any spectators and visitors park on Heaton street, and enter our Heaton field via the walkway through the trees that is front of the Elmwood tennis courts. Thank you for your support, it is greatly appreciated.
STAFF & SPORT LEADER ORGANISATION & ROLES:
Our Heaton Sports Leaders will be helping set up, coordinate and pack up our school athletics days. Year 7 Sports Leaders will be helping on Wednesday (Year 8 Event), and Year 8 Sports Leaders will be helping on Thursday (Year 7 Event). Mr Evers will meet the sports leaders on Tuesday 25th October at morning tea (10:15am) in the hall to confirm their roles and responsibilities.
Sports leaders are required to meet Mr. Evers outside the PE shed promptly at 7:45am on both days (Wednesday and Thursday) so they can assist with set-up. Please ensure you bring everything you need with you e.g. packed lunch, water bottle, snacks etc. If you are unable to attend for any reason e.g. sickness, you must communicate this with Mr. Evers via email.
