Our school is very fortunate to have the help of many dedicated community members and teachers who are giving up their time to train and coach our teams. Representing Heaton in an inter-school competition is a privilege. We have an expectation that students reflect our school values and that their behaviour both during school, and in the wider community is respectful and positive. All participants must read and follow both the Heaton Sports Code of Conduct and PSC Code of Conduct

Meeting Times / Locations / Bus Organisation:

All students must eat lunch in their designated house areas, and then meet their coaches when dismissed at 12:40pm in the following locations. Please be prompt, line up in your teams and wait respectfully for your coaches so we can arrive at Hagley with sufficient time to warm up and get prepared.

Injuries (what do I do?):

If you are injured, you will still travel with your Hagley Sport team on Tuesday afternoons to support your team(s) and assist your coaches.

Equipment Requirements:

Students must ensure they have their PE Kit / Sports Uniform (including Heaton hat), appropriate footwear/boots, sunblock, specialised sports equipment (pads, bat, gloves etc.) and a water bottle. It is their personal responsibility to ensure you have all the correct equipment each week so please be organised.

Language lessons, Kapa Haka and Orchestra: If you attend language tuition or you are involved in the Heaton orchestra and/or Kapa Haka and this clashes with a scheduled training session, you must notify your coach. These three school commitments take priority over a training session. An alternate time or training with a different Heaton team will be made available to you if possible.

Additional Information from PSC:

The purpose of weekly sport is to give all interested young people a chance to play sport against others in our region. The enjoyment of all is of most importance to us and if this means having to alter games to accommodate differing abilities then please take the initiative and do this.

Cancellations:

The P.S.C Sports Director, in conjunction with the ChCh City Council will make any decisions regarding cancellations due to weather or pitch/court conditions. These decisions will be make by 11:30am, and any information will be updated to the school daily notices, and sent out via text through the Heaton app.

Cost:

As an opt-in (user pay sporting opportunity), participation in a Heaton team does incur a cost that cover transportation, and this will be added to your school account. Attention all tackle rugby players: To play in the inter-school competition, you must access the form below with your caregivers and register with NZ Rugby (https://www.sporty.co.nz/viewform/142036)

INJURIES: 

If you are injured, you will still travel with your Hagley Sport team on Tuesday afternoons to support your team(s) and assist your coaches.

EQUIPMENT REQUIREMENTS 

  • Students must ensure they have their PE Kit / Sports Uniform, appropriate footwear/boots, specialised sports equipment (shin pads, mouth guards, squash glasses, racquets, table tennis bats etc.) and a water bottle. It is your personal responsibility to ensure you have all the correct equipment so please pack the night before. Students must also ensure they have all relevant personal medication e.g. epipen, ventolin.
  • Please ensure you bring warm layers if you are participating in outdoor sport. There may be days where the weather is chilly, but sport will go ahead.  
  • Heaton Hockey, Football and Rugby players must wear plain yellow socks as part of their uniform. These can be purchased at the school canteen for $15.00 or are available at any sports shop. 
  • Rippa participants can choose to wear trainers or boots when they play, however, the condition of the grounds at Hagley may influence your decision. If you have a pair of boots please bring these along with you.
  • A reminder about non-marking shoes for badminton. Badminton do have some spare shoes at the centre if needed on the day.

Please Note: All jewellery must be removed when you are taking part in the Tuesday afternoon inter-school sports competitions.

Coaches and players have a responsibility to access the following document to read your relevant information so that you are aware of the rules and specific requirements:

MEETING TIMES, LOCATIONS & ORGANISATION: 

  • During the winter sport season, lunch will begin at 12:20pm on Tuesday afternoons.
  • Students are to go to their designated house area when the bell sounds and must sit down to eat their lunch. 
  • After lunch at 12:40pm, students are required to meet their teachers/coaches in their designated area. 
  • Please ensure you sit down in your teams quickly and quietly so you can be registered as our buses will depart promptly at 12:50pm. 

Sporting groups are to meet at the following locations at 12:40pm:

  • Boys’ Football: Hall quad
  • Hockey: Hall
  • Tackle 10’s Rugby: In front of Room 12/Outside LRC
  • Rippa Rugby: Flagpole
  • Girls’ Football– Room 4 for attendance then flagpole
  • Netball– Court by Science Block
  • Table Tennis/Badminton– P.A.C Steps

BUS GROUPINGS – which bus do I get on?

Please stay with your T.I.C so that you do not end up in the wrong location.

  • Bus 1: Netball Year 8 teams plus Year 7 A team
  • Bus 2: Netball Year 7 B, Netball Year 7 C and 27 Football open players (Mr Cooper will have a list)
  • Bus 3: Tackle Rugby
  • Bus 4 : 49 Football Open Players (Mr Cooper will have a list)
  • Bus 5: Girls Football and Rippa Rugby
  • Bus 6: Badminton and Table tennis
  • Bus 7/Bus 8 : Hockey – Split over two buses

WEATHER CANCELLATIONS:

The Sports Director, in conjunction with the ChCh City Council will make any decisions regarding cancellations due to weather or pitch/court conditions. These decisions will be made by 11:30 am, and any information will be communicated to students and their parents/caregivers via Hero and the school Daily Notices. Please be aware that Table Tennis and Badminton will continue regardless of cancellations as these are at indoor venues. If a cancellation is made due to Hagley Park ground conditions only, Nunweek Park Hockey and Netball will continue.

TRAINING SESSIONS:

As outlined in our Sports Code of Conduct (see above), we have an expectation that students show commitment to their team by attending a weekly training session. Coaches will be advertising training sessions in the daily notices and will be taking attendance registers. If you are unable to make a particular training session you must communicate this with your coach in person or via email.

LANGUAGE LESSONS & ORCHESTRA:

If you attend Language tuition or are involved in the Heaton orchestra and this clashes with a scheduled training session you must notify your coach. Language lessons and the Orchestra always take priority, as an alternate time or training with a different Heaton team will be possible.

The purpose of weekly sport is to give all interested young people a chance to play sport against others in our region. The enjoyment of all is of most importance to us and if this means having to alter games to accommodate differing abilities then please take the initiative and do this.

  • Touch: Meet Miss Just, Mrs Clarkson, Miss Laifa and Miss Pearce in the hall. Touch will be using 2 x 50 seater coaches and travelling to North Hagley.
  • Ultimate Frisbee: Meet Mr Phanpho and Miss Osborn at the PAC steps. Ultimate Frisbee will be travelling on a 35-seater coach and travelling to South Hagley.
  • Futsal: Meet Mr Cooper, Mr Williamson and Mr Grant on the Netball Courts. Futsal has 1 x 45 seater coach and 1 x 33 seater coach. You will be travelling to South Hagley and playing on the netball courts.
  • Softball: Meet Mr Naidoo and Miss Kara in Room 4. Softball will be travelling on a 33-seater bus to South Hagley.
  • Cricket: Meet Mr Brown, Mrs Edge and Miss Christie at the Heaton flagpole. Cricket has a 1 x 45 seater coach that will travel to South Hagley and you will play at the Polo Grounds.

Before leaving school, coaches must ensure they leave a photocopy of their register at reception so we can monitor students that are offsite.

Coaches must collect their sport/team medical kit from the front office. These should be kept for the duration of the summer sports season. Please see Marg or Sue to replenish any supplies that are used. Basic first aid equipment and ice packs will be available for Heaton students during their matches.

Community involvement in our sports programme is crucial to its success and allows us to offer many more opportunities for our students.
