Heaton Athletics 2025

DATES:

  • Long distance races: Tuesday 14th October @ STAC.
    • Races will begin at 7:30am.
    • Registrations will be included here once they have closed.
  • Year 7: Wednesday 15th October @ STAC
  • Year 8: Thursday 16th October @ STAC

MEETING TIMES: An earlier 8:30am bell will sound on both days and students/teachers are to promptly make their way to their Heaton classrooms for the roll. After HERO has been completed, teachers will accompany their class to the St Andrew’s field (via Circuit St).

FINISHING TIME / ORGANISATION: Athletics Day is scheduled to finish at 1:30 pm after our class relays. Students will be transitioned back to Heaton by their class teacher, and they will have an opportunity for a lunch break until 2pm before returning to class for the remainder of the afternoon.

STRUCTURE OF THE DAY: Our Athletics Day is structured to ensure maximum participation, with every student contributing points to their Kaupeka.

1. Compulsory Field Events & 60m Sprint

All students will participate in four Field Events: Shot Put, Discus, High Jump, and Long Jump, plus the 60m Sprint. These are completed within their class/kaupeka groups.

  • Class Points: Students earn points (1 to 4) for their class based on reaching specific markers or heights.
  • CAIMS Qualification: There is no separate sign-up for competitive field events. Any student who achieves the highest level (‘4’ marker/height) will have their result officially measured and recorded. The top three overall performers in each field event will be selected to represent the school at the CAIMS Athletics Championships.

2. Optional Competitive Track Events

These are the events that require pre-registration and are run separately from the class groups.

CAIMS Qualification: Competing in these track events is mandatory for CAIMS eligibility. The top three finishers in each of these events will be selected for the CAIMS Athletics Championships.

Events: Students compete in the 60m, 100m, 200m, 800m, or 1500m (Note: Students may not enter both the 60m and 100m, or both the 800m and 1500m).

Class Points: Any student who competes in a registered competitive track event automatically earns 4 points for their class, regardless of their placing.

UNIFORM: Students are to compete in their Heaton PE uniform (PE shorts please), with the option of wearing a house-coloured t-shirt and accessories. Please check with your teacher if you are not sure about your house colour.

Students must arrive at school in their PE Kit and house colours so they are ready to compete. Please note that our Heaton Athletics Day is not a mufti day, so jeans and non-athletic casual wear are not permitted. Students can transition home in their PE uniforms, so bringing your full school uniform will not be required.
