Canterbury Primary & Intermediate Schools Boccia Championships 2017
We are so proud to acknowledge the amazing efforts of Anton and Hamish, who took part in this years Canterbury Boccia Championships. Our boys were faced with strong opposition from Sumner, Addington, Clearview, Merrin, Lincoln and Southbridge schools. Anton and Hamish worked extremely hard throughout the term, and attended weekly training sessions to prepare for this tournament, and their efforts certainly did not go unrewarded. Anton finished in 4th position, and Hamish in 7th position overall. A big thank you must also go to the wonderful Sarah Helleur and the learning support team, for their continued efforts and support with preparing our students for these opportunities.
Youthtown Super 10’s Tournament – Term 2, 2017
Youthtown workshops have become an integral part of our sporting programme at Heaton, and the confidence of our students who attend their sessions has continued to go from strength to strength. The term two focus for this year was on the development of fundamental skill application across three games; Fast 5 Netball, Dodgeball and Kabaddi. As a culmination of the hard work and efforts throughout the winter term, forty of our students competed in the Super 10’s Tournament, held at Cowles Stadium. The tournament was a wonderful experience, allowing us to compete against a variety of Christchurch primary schools that we do not usually have the opportunity of interacting with on the Intermediate circuit. We had a fantastic time, and would like to thank all of the Youthtown staff for their continued support, and for always putting in the extra effort. We look forward to may more Super 10’s events in the future.

Student Reflection – Sophie W (Heaton Harrier Basketball Player)
We arrived early to school full of excitement as two days of basketball awaited us, we were allocated to our cars and then we left. There was a briefing as we arrived then the games began. The games were 15 minutes long with no half time, the Heaton girls basketball team – Heaton Harriers – played 4 games on the Monday against Villa Maria, Breens, Christchurch South and Cobham we won 3 of the 4 which we were extremely happy about it. It then meant we were through to the A grade the follow day along with Cobham, Christchurch South, Casebrook, James Hargest and Ashburton.
As we arrived at Pioneer Stadium on the second day we knew we had a extremely tough day ahead of us as we were going up against the top 5 basketball teams in the South Island. Our first games was against James Hargest from Invercargill they were a remarkably strong team and unfortunately we lost. Our next two games were also against very strong teams and unfortunately we lost those too. We then played ChCh South it was a good game and we finished on top which we were very happy about. It was time for our last game against Ashburton, they were quite a physical team and with about 1 minute to go we were winning when someone in our team was pushed and tripped as she hit the ground her knee hyperextended. As this used up the last minute of the game Ashburton contested so we had to play an extra minute. It was really intense and loud but as the time ended we were so relieved to have won. On a whole we didn’t do as well as we’d wanted to and we finished 5th, but we had so much fun and thoroughly enjoyed it.
Student Reflection – Jacob H (Heaton Hawks Basketball Player)
On day two we had a briefing in the morning then we were straight into our first game against St Thomas. This was a very good game with a 36-4 win to us. Our next game was against Kirkwood. We really wanted to win this to prove that we were better than our Aims Games tournaments showed. This game was a very great game for us with a 37-8 win. The number 3 game was against ChCh South where we won 30-19. Our next game was against the number 1 ranked team from pool 2, Cobham. This game was nothing like our other encounters with them in the past, winning 34-6. In our last match of the day we won again, this time against Chisnallwood with a score line of 32 – 14. After this game was over we had a break and then it was time for the presentation of the certificates. We sat for a while giving applause then it was our time. It felt great to get some success at the end of the year.
On behalf of the team I would like to thank Mr Evers for running the day so well and Mr Robinson, Jane Newton for all the hard work they put in for us over the year. Thank you
Student Reflection – Claude T (Heaton Badminton Player)
Student Reflection – Sam C (Heaton A Volleyball Player)
The first day we were in pool A but only won two of our games, so on Tuesday we were put down into pool B. As the games went by, we worked as a team, and got better and better. By the end we had won a total of 6 games over two days and came third in pool B which was an amazing effort. But the best thing was that everyone had fun.
Aims Games Championships 2016
Student Reflection – Connor N (Basketball Captain)
The moment I walked into the stadium I was ecstatic, we had officially arrived at the AIMS Games 2016. We looked across the courts ecstatically ready to play our first game. When the ball was tipped I was filled with excitement and nerves as our first game in Tauranga started, we were playing Howick and we were ready to win. As the game went on it was clear we were the dominant team finishing the game with a score of 62-18. Throughout the tournament we continued to play well but we didn’t make it through to the playoffs as the teams that came 1st and 4th beat us. But we still came 19th out of 53 teams! And Tauranga was a great experience for me and my teammates and I wish I could do it again next year.
Student Reflection – Rosa B (Multi-sport Silver Medal Winner)
On Wednesday of Aims I competed in Multi-sport. The course started with a 2.5km run and was then followed by the hardest part, a 4km mountain bike. About 1km of the bike was incredibly difficult uphill and it ended with a rutty downhill that had caused many people to fall off. The last part of the course was a 1km kayak and then a tiring sprint to the finish line. Overall, it was a challenging but fun experience and I’d definitely recommend it to more Heaton students!
Student Reflection – Emily B (Hockey Captain / Silver Medal Winner)
Wow what a week!
We landed in Auckland on Sunday morning and jumped straight on the bus, everyone was so excited to get to Tauranga. When we got there we hung around at the beach (had an awesome Copenhagen ice-cream) and headed over to the opening ceremony. The opening ceremony was amazing, the head of The Aims games spoke and then there were some outstanding performances from Benny Tipene, King, and the world champion hip hop team. Also some very inspiring Olympic medalists spoke, Sam Meech, Molly Meech and Lukka Jones. It was an unforgettable night and I remember one of the yr 7s in my team turning around and saying, “ OMG this is amazing.” After the Opening ceremony we all went out to go see our billets. Some of us were a bit nervous but I was lucky because I had the same ones as last year.
When we turned up to the turf the next day we were all a bit nervous, but we went out there and played amazingly against Auckland Dio and came out with a win, 3-1. After that game we all went back to the house and relaxed until our next game that day, Otumoetai who came second last year. We were all a bit tired, missed heaps of shots and ended up with a draw.
The next day we turned up to the turf getting ready to play Albany. We played a good game winning 3-0. We then had a great game in the evening and smashed Kristin school 5-0. We finished top of our pool and made it through to the top 8. On Wednesday morning we went and watched the boys basketball team play and then played our quarter-finals later that night against St Cuthbert’s, we bet them 2-0.
Then we had semi-finals. We were playing Kamo school from Whangarei who have produced 5 black sticks. We thought they would be pretty tough but we played fantastically and smashed them 3-0. We had gotten through to the finals!!!
The next day was finals day, we were playing off for the gold medal!! We were playing Tauranga Intermediate and we so wanted to win but after such a big week we didn’t have enough fuel in the tank so we lost 0-1, there were a few tears but we still came out with a silver medal.

Our fantastic bowls sessions provided by Emily (Bowls Canterbury) was the perfect preparation for this years Intermediates’ Tournament. Twelve Heaton pairs teams attended this years tournament and under the watchful eye of Mr Robinson competed brilliantly. Our top team finished the day 4th in the A-Grade competition, an outstanding result for students who had very little experience until this term.

Year 7 & 8 Korfball Tournament 2015
Reflection One: Written by Maddy S (Year 8 Team)
After months of training and preparing, game day finally came. We roamed into the stadium, ready to get under way and to defend our title. Our coaches had high expectations of us to win as both Chelsea and Juliet were in the Heaton team that had previously won and taken out the competition. We were excited to check out the other teams to see what we could potentially come up against. Eager to play, we waited and waited. Miss Mills gave us a quick briefing and then we were under way.
After the first game we were bursting with energy and pumped from the win. Fortunately enough, we were on a roll, unbeaten after a day of Korfball. Then it was final. The Heaton Year 7 team cheered us on from the sideline with lots of enthusiasm. An intense final against Beckenham School was a good way to finish off the day. With a convincing win (the final score 8-4), we held the trophy once again!
A big thanks to Miss Mills and Mr Evers for the organisation. Thank you also to Juliet and Chelsea for coaching us the whole day and many thanks to Rob and Torsten for all the effort you put in to make it happen.
Reflection Two: Written by Jonty H (Year 7 Team)
Shooting hoops, moving around trying to avoid defenders, but at the same time trying to stay in your half. That’s what korfball is all about. I found the first tournament pretty fun (even if we did lose all our games). Not only was it fun but it was really intense.
Preparation for the tournament was really just 7:45am trainings on a Wednesday morning. We learnt all sorts of different things for movement, shooting and defending. During most of our training sessions we played games against the Yr8s or Boys vs Girls. We have also done some shooting games like ‘Knockout’ where you are under pressure and have to try and beat the person in front of you to knock them out!
At the tournament I noticed that the other schools teams were a mixture of year 7s and 8s. This made the games harder for us because my team was only Yr7s. Being out on the court was pretty hard not only because we were versing year 7s and 8s but because of the actual game itself. From avoiding defenders to marking them and from shooting to penalties this is what makes Korfball, Korfball.
