Heaton Swimming Sports 2026

Meeting Time: 11:15am in the Heaton School Hall

All competitors are required to meet in the hall promptly at 11:15am. Please ensure you get changed into your swimming togs, with your PE uniform over the top at morning tea. Please sit down in your house groups so we can mark the roll and depart on time.

Please note: Students are to arrive at school in their Heaton School Uniform as normal.

Equipment Requirements (what do I need to bring?):

  • Swimming togs – please ensure students are changed into their swimming togs and wearing their Heaton PE kit over the top before they get onto the bus. This way students are ready to race when we arrive at the venue
  • Swimming cap (if required)

  • Packed lunch with sufficient healthy snacks

Event Structure and Timing:

Our goal is to make our school swimming sports as student-focused and relaxed as possible. It is an opportunity for our confident swimmers to experience respectful competition, and for our beginner/ novice swimmers to feel encouraged and supported.

Term 4 Korfball Tournament 2023

Please ensure you read the following tournament information carefully so you are prepared for a great tournament day. Thank you to Mrs Earl and Mr Colvin for their organisation and for making this opportunity possible for our students.

PARTICIPATION LIST:

TOURNAMENT DATE & VENUE: 

  • Monday 4th December at Hagley Netball Courts

If there are any changes due to weather and the tournament is cancelled, students will be notified via the Heaton daily notices and caregivers will be communicated with via Hero.

MEETING TIME & LOCATION:

  • All participants are required to meet promptly at the canteen foyer at 8:15 a.m. The bus will depart at 8:30am.
  • You need to be changed into your Heaton PE uniform – wear this to school, and have all your equipment for the tournament.

COST:

As an opt-in (user pay) sporting opportunity, participation in this tournament will incur a cost that covers tournament entry fees and return transportation.

These costs will be added to your Heaton school account and are expected to be approx. $22.00 per person. If you would prefer that your child is not involved, please email Tory Earl (earlt@heaton.school.nz) or Sam Colvin (colvins@heaton.school.nz) before Friday 1st December.

This charge will be added to your account in arrears so please do not pay until the amount shows on your school account.

STUDENT EQUIPMENT REQUIREMENTS: 

Please ensure you have the following equipment with you on Monday:

  • Heaton Cap and sunblock
  • Heaton PE kit (you can wear this to school)

MEETING TIMES: An earlier 8:30am bell will sound on both days and students/teachers are to promptly make their way to their Heaton classrooms for registration. After Linc-Ed has been completed, teachers will accompany their class to the St Andrew’s field (via Circuit St).

FINISHING TIME / ORGANISATION: The day is scheduled to finish at 1:00 pm. Students will be transitioned back to Heaton by their class teacher and they will have an opportunity for a lunch break until 1:45 pm.

UNIFORM: Students are to compete in their Heaton PE uniform (PE shorts please), with the option of wearing a house-coloured t-shirt and accessories. Please check with your teacher if you are not sure about your house colour.

Students must arrive at school in their PE Kit and house colours so they are ready to compete. Please note that our Heaton Athletics Day is not a mufti day, so jeans and non-athletic casual wear are not permitted. Students can transition home in their PE uniforms, so bringing your full school uniform will not be required.

EQUIPMENT REQUIREMENTS (what to bring?): All students must ensure they have the following items

  • Packed lunch with healthy snacks (N.B. students cannot leave the venue to purchase or collect food from the school canteen)
  • N.B. Spikes cannot be worn at our school athletics days

SCHEDULE:  Whānau are very welcome to come along to support. Please arrive using the Circuit Street entrance and avoid cutting through STAC School Grounds. Please note, the following schedule may be subject to minor changes throughout the day so please consider this when planning arrival times.

Heaton Athletics Day Event Schedule 2023

N.B Track events (60m, 100m races) get priority over field events (jumping and throwing disciplines). If you are called to marshall for a track event, please let the teacher(s) in charge of your field event know that you will be leaving to run your race and that you will return to complete your field event asap.

SPORTS LEADER ORGANISATION & RESPONSIBILITIES: Our Heaton Sports Leaders will be helping set up, coordinate and pack up our school athletics days. Year 7 Sports Leaders will be helping on Wednesday (Year 8 Event), and Year 8 Sports Leaders will be helping on Thursday (Year 7 Event). Please check the document below so you are aware of your specific duties

Sports leaders are required to meet Mrs Henderson directly at the venue (St Andrew’s track), promptly at 7:45am so they can assist with set-up. Please ensure you bring everything you need with you e.g. packed lunch, as you will not be returning to school until the end of the athletics day. If you are unable to attend for any reason e.g. sickness, you must communicate this with Mrs Henderson via email asap.

Kōru Games Wrap Up 2023

What a great three days were had at Kōru Games at the end of last term. This was Heaton’s first time attending this event, and our eight teams performed incredibly well. Our athletes treated everyone with respect, competed with exemplary sportsmanship and showed growth and improvements over the three days. We hope that everyone who competed walked away feeling proud of themselves and that some lifelong memories have been made.

We would like to extend our thanks to our fantastic coaches and staff who supported us over the three days, as well as running practices in the weeks leading up to the tournament, our volunteer officials from Christchurch Boys High and community sports groups who refereed countless games over the three days, and the organisers from the Selwyn Sports Trust for organising such a fabulous event.

Primary Schools & CAIMS Duathlon

If for any reason you are no longer able to take part in this event, please email Mrs Henderson (hendersonk@heaton.school.nz) before 9:00am on Tuesday 29th August so Primary Sport Canterbury can be updated on the changes.

Venue: Ruapuna Raceway (Mike Pero Motorsport Park)

Reporting & Event Times: Reporting time is 9am for race marshalls in the carpark. Please meet at the event no later than 8:45 to ensure your child has adequate time to rack their bikes in transition. The race will commence as soon as possible after the first race briefing – this will be run at the start line before each race.

Race Times: 

  • Year 8 Run 2km, bike 9km, run 1km – Open race to start at 9:45am, Girls 9:50am
  • Year 7 Run 2km, bike 9km, run 1km – Open race to start at 10:30am, Girls 10:35am

Collecting Bikes: All bikes must be left in transition until all competitors in all age groups have finished their races.

Cancellation: Any cancellation information will be posted on the P.S.C Website (www.primarysportscanterbury.org.nz). There is no postponement date, so a cancellation will not occur unless the weather conditions are extreme.

Equipment Requirements:

  • All Duathlon race equipment i.e. bike, helmet, running shoes etc.
  • Heaton PE top with Hat – students can wear black bike shorts if they prefer over PE shorts.

Kōru Games 2023

We are very excited to be sending 8 teams to Kōru Games this year! This is the biggest team that Heaton has ever sent to this tournament and a fantastic opportunity for our ākonga!

MEETING TIMES & LOCATIONS

Day 1 Logistics – Tuesday 19th September

  • On Tuesday, all competitors are to please meet in the hall at 7:50 a.m. A roll will be taken, and then we will depart on the bus at 8:10 a.m. 
  • All competitors will travel to the Selwyn Netball Centre where we will attend the opening ceremony. 
  • Everyone should be changed into their sporting uniform when they arrive at school – please ensure your child has plenty of warm layers for the day. They do not need their school uniform. 
  • The opening ceremony concludes at 10 a.m.
    • All students involved with hockey, football and basketball will then jump back on the bus and head to their venues in Prebbleton and Rolleston where matches will begin. 
    • Destinations: Prebbleton Reserve, Rolleston and then onto Foster Park
    • All other students will remain in Lincoln and head to their sporting venues.  

Day 2 and 3 logistics

Students competing in touch, football, hockey and basketball will depart at the following times:  

  • Meet at 7:50 am, leave: at 8.00 a.m. to Prebbleton Reserve, Rolleston and then onto Foster Park
  • Return:  2.30 p.m. Foster Park and then onto Prebbleton Reserve to Heaton
  • Meet in the hall at 7:50am.

Students competing in netball and rugby sevens will depart at the following times: 

  • Meet at 8:20 a.m., leaving school at  8.30 a.m. to Selwyn Netball Centre, North Belt, Lincoln
  • Return:  2.30 p.m. to Heaton
  • Meet in the hall at 8:20 am.

Please note that we may be returning to school after 3 p.m. on these three days as some games conclude at 2:45 p.m. I will communicate via the Hero App our ETA each day.

EXPECTED BUS RETURN TIMES: It is expected that students will return to school at approx. 3:00pm. Once draws have been released, I will be sure to share any changes to this information. 

Canterbury Cross Country Champs 2023

On Wednesday 21st June, 35 of our finest runners attended the Primary and CAIMS Canterbury Cross Country Champs at Ngā Puna Wai to compete against the best year 7 and 8 runners from around the region. The weather was perfect for some fast running after a few days of rain, and while the course was muddy and wet underfoot in some places, our runners produced some outstanding results. A massive congratulations to all of our athletes who represented our school with pride.

Meeting Time: All students are required to meet Mrs Henderson in the Heaton hall at 9:50am. The team bus will depart promptly at 10:15am so please ensure you are prompt and organised.

If your parent/caregiver would prefer to take you directly to the venue in the morning, they must contact Mrs Henderson via email before Friday 16th June.

Risk Management (Primary Sports Canterbury)

Additional Information: If for any reason you no longer wish to take part or are sick on the day of the event, please email Mrs Henderson asap so the opportunity can be offered to another student on our waiting list.

  • Pack down: 1:00pm after the last race

  • Food/coffee: This will be at the Nga Puna Wai Café or at the Coffee Cart (these are pointed out on the map)

  • Course Marshalls: The officials are required to assist around the course will indicated on the marshal’s map. They are to report to Georgia (Event Manger) underneath the first set of rugby posts at 9:45am. Each zone will supply an adult for this task. This person must stay in place for all 9 races even if the school they represent is only entered in a certain race. As you are a marshal you play a highly important role on the day to encourage participants as they go past and direct the children in the right direction. – Please note CAIMS MARSHALLS MEET AT 11:00am TO SWAP WITH ON COURSE MARSHALLS AND COLLECT NUMBERS.

  • Zone Recorders and Marshalls: Recorder – on the day – come to collect timing chips and distribute to their zone participants and write their number on each participants arm. Marshal – on the day please stay at your allocated position at the course for all races. This position could be shared but each zone must cover that position for all races. Please come and collect your numbers from 9am this is shown on the Marshalls map at the main collection point based at the first rugby posts.

  • Rubbish: Please be a tidy kiwi and make sure your zones/schools pick up their rubbish and take it home.

  • First aid: This is going to be stationed by the start line with St John – Refer to site map for more information

  • Merchandise: A commemorative Canterbury Cross Country tee is available for purchase for $25 each. These are to be ordered online and will be available for collection at the event on 21 June. All links for purchasing are on the PSC website homepage. Orders close on June 5th!

Payments for the 2023 winter sports season must be made prior to game 4 of the season (Friday 9th June).

INJURIES: 

If you are injured, you will still travel with your Hagley Sport team on Tuesday afternoons to support your team(s) and assist your coaches.

EQUIPMENT REQUIREMENTS: 

  • Students must ensure they have their PE Kit / Sports Uniform, appropriate footwear/boots, specialised sports equipment (shin pads, mouth guards, squash glasses, racquets, table tennis bats etc.) and a water bottle. It is your personal responsibility to ensure you have all the correct equipment so please pack the night before. Students must also ensure they have all relevant personal medication e.g. epipen, ventolin.
  • Please ensure you bring warm layers if you are participating in outdoor sport. There may be days where the weather is chilly, but sport will go ahead.  
  • Heaton Hockey, Football and Rugby players must wear plain yellow socks as part of their uniform. These can be purchased at the school canteen for $15.00 or are available at any sports shop. Please see Mrs Henderson if you have any questions or concerns.
  • Rippa participants can choose to wear trainers or boots when they play, however, the condition of the grounds at Hagley may influence your decision. If you have a pair of boots please bring these along with you.

Please Note: All jewellery must be removed when you are taking part in the Tuesday afternoon inter-school sports competitions.

GAME RULES: 

Coaches and players have a responsibility to access the following document to read your relevant information so that you are aware of the rules and specific requirements:

MEETING TIMES, LOCATIONS & ORGANISATION: 

  • During the winter sport season, lunch will begin at 12:20pm on Tuesday afternoons.
  • Students are to go to their designated house area when the bell sounds and must sit down to eat their lunch. 
  • After lunch at 12:40pm, students are required to meet their teachers/coaches in their designated area. 
  • Please ensure you sit down in your teams quickly and quietly so you can be registered as our buses will depart promptly at 12:50pm. 

Sporting groups are to meet at the following locations at 12:40pm:

  • Boys’ Football: Hall quad
  • Hockey: Hall
  • Tackle 10’s Rugby: Round tables outside the LRC
  • Rippa Rugby and Girls’ Football– Flagpole
  • Netball– Outdoor basketball court
  • Table Tennis/Badminton– P.A.C Steps
  • Squash – Outdoor basketball court (next to the undercover walkway)

BUS GROUPINGS – which bus do I get on?

  • Hockey – Split over two 40-seater buses
  • Badminton and Table Tennis – One bus
  • Netball – Split over two 40-seater buses
  • Rippa Rugby and Yellow Rugby Team – One bus  
  • Rugby Green and Gold Teams – One bus
  • Football – Split over two buses – one bus will go to Hagley College bus stop
  • Football Girls – One bus

WEATHER CANCELLATIONS: The Sports Director, in conjunction with the ChCh City Council will make any decisions regarding cancellations due to weather or pitch/court conditions. These decisions will be made by 10:30 am, and any information will be communicated to students and their parents/caregivers via Hero and the school Daily Notices. Please be aware that Squash, Table Tennis, Badminton and Rock Climbing will continue regardless of cancellations as these are all indoor venues. If a cancellation is made due to Hagley Park ground conditions only, Nunweek Park Hockey and Netball will continue.

TRAINING SESSIONS: As outlined in our Sports Code of Conduct (see above), we have an expectation that students show commitment to their team by attending a weekly training session. Coaches will be advertising training sessions in the daily notices and will be taking attendance registers. If you are unable to make a particular training session you must communicate this with your coach in person or via email.

LANGUAGE LESSONS & ORCHESTRA: If you attend Language tuition or are involved in the Heaton orchestra and this clashes with a scheduled training session you must notify your coach. Language lessons and the Orchestra always take priority, as an alternate time or training with a different Heaton team will be possible.

ADDITIONAL UPDATES FROM PRIMARY SPORT CANTERBURY:

The purpose of weekly sport is to give all interested young people a chance to play sport against others in our region. The enjoyment of all is of most importance to us and if this means having to alter games to accommodate differing abilities then please take the initiative and do this.
