ADDITIONAL UPDATES FROM PRIMARY SPORT CANTERBURY:
The purpose of weekly sport is to give all interested young people a chance to play sport against others in our region. The enjoyment of all is of most importance to us and if this means having to alter games to accommodate differing abilities then please take the initiative and do this.
The Why: The Heaton Cross Country provides us with another opportunity to come together as a school and get some fresh air in the lungs. While this may not be everyone’s favourite event on the calendar, it is an opportunity for you to get out in the fresh air, get your body moving, push yourself out of your comfort zone, participate and do your very best. Plus – it’s a fun house event!
COURSE MAP
On lap one, students will begin at the green triangle, and head northwest so they are running away from Heaton Street. Students will then run clockwise laps around the perimeter of the park until the required distance is completed.

COMPETITIONS
The Heaton cross country is a Rhodes Shield Event. Students will receive points for their class and kaupeka using the following format.
Points will be distributed as follows:
1st = 1 point, 33rd = 33 points, 95th = 95 points etc.
Non-runners with a note = 100 points.
Non-runners without a note = 150 points.

If your teacher participates in either the competitive or recreational race, your class will receive -50 points off your total.
The class with the least amount of points will win – This will be averaged across the number of students in your class. This average will also be applied to find our Rhodes Shield winners.
There will be a winning class from each year level.
Based on the race results (placings and times), the top 10 students from each gender/year level will be invited to represent Heaton at the Cross Country Championships (hosted by Primary Sports Canterbury).

A highlight was seeing our more experienced players supporting and guiding our players who were new to tennis. Well done and congratulations to all participants for showing fantastic sportsmanship, support and respect. A big thank you to Elmwood Tennis Club for hosting and supporting this fabulous event.

Event Structure, Timing and Covid Considerations:
Our goal is to make our school swimming sports as student-focused and relaxed as possible. It is an opportunity for our confident swimmers to experience respectful competition, and for our beginner/ novice swimmers to feel encouraged and supported.
Although we are unable to host spectators this year, we are seeking assistance from caregivers who are willing and able to assist us with lane timing for the duration of the competition (12pm – 2:45pm).
If you would like to provide assistance with any lane timing responsibilities, please contact Kate Henderson before 9:00am on Friday 17th February (hendersonk@heaton.school.nz).
Cost:
Participation in the Heaton swimming sports event is based on our user-pay model (opt-in) and will involve a cost that covers return transportation to the event and pool hire. These costs will be added to your school account and will be due by Friday 17th March (week 7). If you have any questions or no longer wish for your child to take part, please contact Mrs Henderson.
